A moonlit scene of the Blakiston Valley in Waterton Lakes National Park,Alberta,May 29,2023. The waxing gibbous Moon is in the frame at top, providing the illumination and lighting Blakiston Creek. Moonlight is the same colour temperature as sunlight,so in a long exposure like this,a scene looks like daylight.

The dusty blue reflection nebulas Messier 78 (bottom) and NGC 2071 (top) in Orion near the red arc of Barnard's Loop at left. A fan-shaped reflection nebula above NGC 2071 is not identified on any charts I had. Dark dust lanes run through the region and colour the sky brown. The tiny variable nebula known as McNeil's Nebula is below M78. Remarkably, some small 16th magnitude galaxies in the PGC catalog are recorded amid the dust at upper right in the frame.

Auroral streamers or rays rather than curtains as part of the pulsating phase of the great equinox display of Northern Lights on March 23,2023. The rays have a strong vertical structure from precipitating electrons but were pulsing off and on rather than rippling. While the predominent colour is green, there is a lot of red and magenta mixed in. The rays appear to be converging up toward the magnetic zenith. This is looking south. Orion is at right.

Sunset colours over White Sands National Monument, New Mexico, December 10, 2013. Venus is at left of centre. This is an HDR (High Dynamic Range) stack of 7 exposures at 2/3 stop increments from -2 to +2 EV, processed first with ACR then with Photomatix Pro. Images taken with the 14mm Rokinon lens at f/4 and Canon 5D MkII at ISO 100. While colour vibrancy has been enhanced the colours to the eye were quite vivid. The HDR technique brings out details in the dark ground while preserving the bright sky.

Officially this was no better than a weak Kp1 level aurora this night but for a time the Lights brightened enough to show colour even to the eye including the pink nitrogen fringe at the bottom of the curtains. This is looking north from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre on the first night of the first group of the 2023 aurora season for the CNSC.

A 150° panorama of the auroral arc across the northern sky, shot from home in Alberta on April 27, 2022. The camera picked up the blue colour at the top of the curtains at left in the northwest from high-altitude sunlight illuminating the tops of the curtains. Otherwise, oxygen reds and greens dominate this fairly quiet display. Coincidentally, the arc of the aurora nicely follows the arc of the Milky Way across the north, then at its lowest for the year in the spring sky.

The northern summer Milky Way setting over the mountains of Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada, with warm golden lighting supplied by the rising waning Moon (behind the camera) illuminating the landscape and sky in a “moonstrike” effect. Taken on September 21, 2019, in frames taken as part of a time-lapse. Faint bands of red airglow tint the sky, though the blue sky colour is from the moonlight. This is taken during the lunar “golden hour.”

The well-publicized - if not overly publicized! - supermoon (a perigee Full Moon) of November 14, 2016, seen here about 3 degrees above the horizon, rising out of low clouds. The yellow colour is natural, and illuminated the field with a golden glow. However, this is a stack of 4 exposures, from long to short, to create an “HDR” style stack as the longest exposure needed for the clouds blew out the bright Moon. A short exposure was needed for the Moon itself. I took 4 exposures at about 2 stop increments from 1.5 seconds to 1/15 second and blended them not with HDR software but with luminosity

Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) in a telephoto lens close-up on July 19, 2020, showing the straight blue ion tail and the curving whitish-yellow dust tail. Even the ion tail was visible in binoculars and traceable out for 12° or so, or two binocular fields. A bit of cyan colour is visible around the head of the comet. The ninth magnitude galaxy NGC 2841 is visible to the right of the comet.

The partial eclipse of the Sun, October 23, 2014, as seen from Jasper, Alberta, shot under clear skies through a mylar filter, on the front of a 66mm f/6 apo refractor using the Canon 60Da for 1/8000 (!) sec exposure at ISO 100. The colours are natural, with the mylar filter providing a neutral “white light” image. The big sunspot on the Sun that day is just disappearing behind the Moon’s limb. The mylar filter gave a white Sun, its natural colour, but I have tinted the Sun’s disk yellow for a more pleasing view that is not just white Sun/black sky.

An all-sky aurora with green and purple curtains, the night of June 7-8, 2014, starting up about 12:30 and going until dawn. This shot was near its peak, from the old barn site near home in southern Alberta. Foreground illumination is from the aurora and ambient sky -- the Moon had set. The Big Dipper is above the Barn. The purple colour is from blue scatttered sunlight hitting the red tops of the auroral curtains. This was with the 16-35mm lens at f/3.2 for 20 seconds at ISO 1600 with the Canon 6D.

A portrait of the infamous STEVE arc of hot flowing gas associated with an active aurora, here showing his distinctive pink colour and the fleeting appearance of the green picket fence fingers that often show up hanging down from the main arc. On this night the green fingers lasted no more than two minutes. STEVE = Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, and is a river of hot gas flowing east to west equatorward of the main aurora band. STEVE appeared after the main Kp5-level aurora died down in activity to the north, typical behaviour for STEVE. He was visible for only 35 to 40 minutes,

This is the California Nebula, aka NGC 1499,in Perseus near the star Menkib,or Xi Persei,at bottom. While this is primarly an emission nebula, there is dust in the periphery forming some faint reflection nebulosity. The main nebula emits strongly in not only the red H-Alpha wavelength but also the blue-green H-Beta wavelength, thus the pink or magenta colour.

The setting Sun descending into a fog bank looking due west,on the evening of the vernal equinox,March 20,2023. The fog dims and reddens the Sun,illustrating atmospheric absorption, and refraction as the solar disk is quite flattened. A couple of sunspots are just visible. The colour gradient is natural and comes from the blend of fog below and clearer twilight sky above.

The colourful region around yellow Antares (bottom) in Scorpius and blue Rho Ophiuchi (top) in Ophiuchus. The nebulas are largely reflection nebulas, taking on the colour of the stars embedded in the nebulas. However, the field also contains a lot of emission nebulosity, hydrogen gas glowing red and magenta. Plus there are fingers of brown dark dusty nebulosity. It is one of the most colourful regions of the sky.
